Our management team comprises six senior leaders with collective responsibility for strategic planning, business management, staff leadership, our teaching philosophy and implementation of Board-endorsed initiatives.

Shula Lazar

Principal

 

Shula joined Carmel School in 2016 from Leibler Yavneh College in Melbourne where she was Deputy Principal and Head of Jewish Studies (Secondary). Shula is a dynamic and energetic leader with demonstrated capabilities in leading teacher teams, and a focus on first-rate classroom pedagogy and delivery. She is committed to excellence in classroom instruction and is able to create strong educational pathways for students. Experienced in pastoral care, Shula has a keen understanding of, and commitment to, educational and religious values. Shula has a Master of Education (Gifted and Talented), a Diploma of Education and a Bachelor of Economics. She has also completed senior education and leadership programs at both the Hebrew University and Harvard University. Her vision for Carmel is that it be a place where students are given every opportunity to gain knowledge, build skills and develop talents.

Simon Lawrence

Director of Jewish Studies

 

Simon Lawrence grew up in the United Kingdom and spent time studying in Israel following school. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Jew’s College and then worked as Technical Director of Bnei Akiva before making Aliya in 1997. Simon studied Special Education at David Yellin College and taught students with a variety of special needs at Keren Or and Chavat Hanoar Hatziyoni.

Simon moved to Perth in 2007 and became the Youth Director and Assistant to the Rabbi at the Perth Hebrew Congregation and has been the Director of Jewish Studies at Carmel School since 2012. Simon’s responsibilities include oversight of the rich and vibrant Jewish Studies curriculum which runs across all year levels at Carmel School. This management includes responsibility for developing meaningful academic and cultural experiences and significant learning for our students.

Melanie Thorpe

Head of Secondary

 

Mel joined Carmel School four years ago as the Head of English and is now our Head of Secondary. Leadership in outstanding schools is a hallmark of Mel’s experience. She defines outstanding schools as those that produce well-rounded, intelligent and compassionate people who can contribute to the wider world in a meaningful and empathetic way. Over the past eighteen years, Mel has enjoyed a wide range of teaching, administration, consultancy, mentoring and advisory roles. Mel’s service to education has traversed the independent and public sectors, as well as secondary and tertiary education. Her focus at each stage has been to build professional learning communities that are focused on self-efficacy, reflective learning and the implementation of best practice approaches to teaching and learning. Mel has a Bachelor of Arts (Media, Film and Television, Literature and Writing) and a Graduate Diploma of Education, both from ECU.

Lynda Fisher

Head of Primary

 

Lynda Fisher has Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education, graduating with distinction from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa. She was awarded the inaugural Napier Boyce award for the being the highest achieving and most promising student. She has also completed an Associate Diploma in Speech and Drama through Trinity College (London). On completion of her studies, she took a position at Torah Academy Primary School in South Africa whilst running her own drama studio. After immigrating to Australia in 1986 and starting a family, she commenced teaching at Carmel School in 1991. Lynda was a finalist in the National Excellence in Teaching Competition in 1997 following which she completed extensive research into frontal lobe brain dysfunction. She completed the GERRIC (Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre) program in Gifted Education in 2007, through the University of NSW. She accepted a leadership role in 2008 at Carmel School and progressed to Head of Primary in 2010.

Lynda values the voice of the child above all else. She encourages parents and staff to listen to their student and respond authentically to the words they speak. Under her leadership, the Primary School strives to kindle the dreams of the students and empower them to achieve highly by attending to all aspects of the child in the best possible way.

John O’Sullivan

Business Manager

 

John holds a Bachelor of Business (WACAE) and has been with the school for ten years. Prior to joining Carmel, he held senior positions with the Keystart Housing Scheme and Challenge (Westpac) Bank. John’s responsibilities include financial management and business planning, professional staff leadership and facilities management.

Susanna Wills-Johnson

Head of Marketing and Communications

Susanna has over 12 years experience in the fields of education marketing, communications, admissions and community engagement. With experience in both WA and NSW, Susanna built her career in the higher education sector before moving to Carmel School at the start of 2017. With a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Master of Business Leadership, Susanna's practical experience is enhanced by solid theoretical training. Susanna has chosen to develop her career in the education sector due to a values-match and a belief in the transformative power education can have on individuals and societies.
