On Monday morning, the Year 10s had the privilege to hear from JNF’s special guest, Eran Doron, Mayor of the Ramat HaNegev region, the largest regional council in Israel. This year’s Shorashim cohort will be visiting the Negev region for 3 days and Doron is the ultimate ambassador. He talked to the students about his devotion to strengthening Israel’s southern periphery. Among his many achievements in developing and promoting communities in the Negev, including Perth’s partner community, Merchav Am, Doron is also leading the new solar-energy valley in the Negev, which is one of the largest renewable energy projects in the world.

Ben Gurion said, “the future of Israel lies in the Negev”. Doron explained to the students that by 2048, Israel’s population will be doubled. The Negev will be the area that needs to accommodate the expanded population. Doron let the students know that they have the power, as well as Perth community, to be part of this vision. Together, we are all working towards achieving Ben Gurion’s dream.
